It's still a game. People do it for pleasure regardless of the hardcore-badge one gets from going and spamscaving and not dying. If risk of dying is high and the most fun/benefit you get is a huge group not roleplaying and using the forage command for an hour, people cease being interested. Despite the setting, people still are playing a game to have fun.

ETA: If all motivations are negative motivations (you will meaninglessly lose your character you may have invested in, you will starve, you will have nothing to do crafts with), you end up having a fairly simplistic game with negative reinforcements being the primary mover of players. See Everquest. It works, though there's room to aspire to greater without making it magic-easy-time mode.

To a certain point, if people want to go out on 4 hour fun times just spam killing mobs, they can play WOW.

We are working on a number of changes that will mean that people don't have to go on the equivalent of MMO raids to survive. At the same time, if players are so scared that they never go out, they can enjoy their shitty armor and lack of supplies.

To wit, the reward for going out is supplies. There is risk associated with that.

I, uh. I actually like it when my characters die/nearly die. If they're happy, I'm usually bored. So bring on the super-crocs, plague, starvation, and murderous kittens. I'm down.
