Excellent post Grandpa though I guess I should have been a little more clear on what I was interested in, though I think you might have given me the right answer anyway. By quality I was referring to the "level" of the item. Poor, normal and good quality gear like leathers->hardened->plated. The higher the quality the more charges of a kit required for repairs as like, a base modifier not yet including the charges necessary for the level of damage that needs to be taken care of.

leathers and hardened are actually equal in terms of effectiveness, just better/worse against different kinds of damage. just FYI, I think this idea has potential.
