So after some fighting today, I noticed something odd about the damage my armor had taken.
Wearing three layers, my greatcoat had taken one hit, hauberk make two or three, and then the armored shirt took six or seven. I'm wondering if layering is applied correctly or if maybe sometimes the best piece of armor isn't being considered as 'primary' to be improved on when you have more than three pieces set out? And if that might be why sometimes you just get bit extremely hard through gear out of nowhere.

Did your hauberk have no small damages? It's more likely that because of the hauberk's significantly higher quality, most of the damages it took were small.
I don't think there's any fundamental bug with armor layering, taking random bursts of damage is more likely just a result of lucky crits.

I was actually wondering if wearing a greatcoat/vest/whatnot over/under hauberks actually helps.

It does, though only a single piece of secondary armor applies.

Hm, so greatcoat/hauberk/shirt combo is a waste? Good to know!
edit: Or maybe not. since the armored shirt I'm guessing is 'higher' level protection than the greatcoat, which is why it took more hits in the torso area. Assuming that the armor is prioritized correctly.
Still interesting to know.

Compared to an armored greatcoat, an armored shirt:
+ weighs less
+ provides about the same overall protection
Compared to an armored greatcoat a metal-plated, leather hauberk:
+ weighs more
+ provides more overall protection
+ protects more against piercing
+ protects more against crushing
+ protects more against slashing
+ protects less against gunshots
Meaning the shirt's only a waste until you get shot. The greatcoat/shirt probably get chosen at random for bludgeon/pierce/slash damage, since they're equally protective otherwise.

Since it's sort of related, how does this effect how clothing takes damage. The non-armored variety, that is. I'm assuming that if it doesn't get considered for armor quality it isn't considered by may just take damage instead? Is there some kind of 'piercing' effect that's required to actually hit the bottom layers?
