The timers go by the skill checks. Amateur are 2, familiar are 6, adroit 24.

I'm aware. I'm just saying. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

It's so someone can't just sit around and pump out ordinary level weapons just because they're smaller. Just like it doesn't make sense that I can't say... pull apart a large robot on a scav because I made some medicine before we left.

Perhapse if knives didnt require a proper hilt. So that you make the blade (6 hours) and use some strips of leather with build ordinary-knife (6 hours to produce an o-quality knife, so it's like poor quality, but takes twice as long, but makes more sense.

woah, wait. We're discussing weaponcrafting and I'm not in on it? Blasphemy.
Anyway, as a veteran weaponcrafter, I say the timers are 100% fair. The 6 hour timers on the blade, the hilt, and the assembly is necessary, otherwise everyone and their mother would have an ordinary sword, an ordinary knife, and a spare three sets in the back. Because it'd be easy to make. The chance to break the blade twice is all the more necessary, since it cuts down on production.
On the idea of using leather strips for ordinary knives... I say no. Never ever. That's pquality stuff.

It's a knife. I agree, the timers are needed. But I think it's silly it takes so long to make a knife. Knives should be easier to make then a sword.

Why? If we make knives easier to make than swords, then we should have three different types of sword blades; short-sword-blade, normal-sword-blade, great-sword-blade.
Why should a knife be easier to make? Because it's smaller? Because it does less damage? Then pistols should be easier to make because they're not as big as rifles. jerkins should be easier to make because they're smaller than hauberks. etc. etc.
The point is, the crafts aren't made with size in mind; they're made with difficulty in mind. Putting a knife on a hilt is just as hard as putting a sword on a hilt, if not harder due to the size of the tang and whatnot.

I haven't seen the skillchecks being uniform. In Atonement, some Adroid handicraft items had a timer of 12, 6, or 24 hours.

Also there are many amateure level skills with no timer at all.
And yes, those are all great reason to make knives easier to make.

Tyrael: mention it.
Mannfried:
Those are (generally) for unfinished products.
