things like hide and scavenge go much quicker since you can learn them a great many times a day, whereas combat is something you have to actively search out.

I want to say that you can "tick up" a skill every two hours. To tick up, you need to do the skill, and you have a higher chance of ticking if you fail it. There are 10 ticks between each time the SKILLS will show you an increase from beginner to novice, to amateur, to familiar etc.

You can also have someone teach you d-w or s-w if you find someone willing and roleplay out the session, but that gets into teaching stuff which I really really don't understand.

This has been very imformative, I like going one sword samurai even though my character may be 'nerfed' as it were. However I have messed around with dual wielding and it provides signifcant advantages in early DPS or defense as long as you get decent weapons, it is often easier to get one good weapon

in the end, I always preferred dualwield, because once you have good deflect and a decent shield you become much harder to kill. BUT you should always, always, ALWAYS pick what makes sense for your character, so I applaud you.

Sole-wield can do just fine for a tank you just don't get that shield deflect boost. Toz didn't use shields, but with 1h you still tick up deflect, so he blocked well. Keep a knife and shield and swap out when you turtle, you will be able to block fine

In Atonement--which may or may not be true for Parallel--the fact that you could get a goodquality shield for tanking and two titon oquality weapons for DPS, made sole-wield weaker than dual-wield.

Plus the fact that you checked more often(swinging more than twice as often) helped.

Sole-wield you have ward... and it's awesome. If you have OK agi and a high skill level you can keep back like a dozen opponents.

Definitely - though the new progs kind of help/helped even the playing field. My point was, if you pick sole-wield you still have that option to pull out a shield. I think it was actually Elias who told Toz he should just snag a shield just in case. If you can deflect with a hammer, you can block with a shield.

Elias only picked up a shield to begin with because of Bet. :p

Though, yeah, you can still use a shield, of course, even without the style skill. You just won't get dual-wield benefits, just the deflect boost.
