That's probably because they did crushing damage and most people wore anti-slash/anti-pierce gear.

I think people love the idea of sparring weapons. They're not actually in love with sparring weapons.

P-quality alion swords are much better to spar with atm than plastic swords would be. Better to get hit by a bleeder than get a fracture. I think it's harder to say that IC though because omgliveweapon.

I'm not going to be terribly happy with anyone who is sparring with real swords, but, that's their issue. Smile

as someone with a little background in fighting with weapons, it kind of bothers me with how sparring is treated. You have to spar someone else in order to get good, if you just run out with the sword and start flailing at somebody you're probably going to get hurt very very badly. there needs to be some kind of happy medium struck, where you're not actually using real weapons and the fight is in a controlled environment with less chance of risk than with a real weapon. That is the only way that learning a weapon makes any kind of realistic sense

Well. If you mean RL, then no- not so much. Japanese Kendo involved a degree of risk when sparring until the shinai was invented because they'd use dulled swords. There was risk of injury, but there were also safeguards in place. Knights fought with blunt weapons for training, etc. - there are lots of examples around. Taking Kendo, since I'm most familiar with that, now that we have shinai? When we have a tournament coming up, the club I belong to spends 1/3rd of practice warming up, 1/3rd drilling, and 1/3rd sparring. A sizable chunk of this is spent sparring because while form is good, you need fighting experience to fight well - so you spar.
