I'm tired. I'd provide a comprehensive listing of reasons why this is a generally bad idea, but I'm tired. Can my word just be taken for it? |
I'd rather have a list of reasons. I'm ignorant and need to be educated.

I have to agree. Having roles that are designed purely with killing PCs in mind is a pretty horrible sounding idea.

Because players shouldn't be playing Characters-As-Devices, which is what those Antagonistic Roles you're discussing are. Players should be playing Characters-As-People, with goals/beliefs that drive them into conflict with others. Conflict among PCs(and preferably a portion of conflict from Staff NPCs) should come from personality/beliefs, rather than the character existing as a Device. Looking over at SoI, Clanlead NPCs were devices usually: they existed primarily to say No/Yes to things Admins did not like/thought were cool. NPCs were the same way--there was a set plot that usually led to combat, and there wasn't a way to achieve an endgoal that generally wasn't planned for, or to bargain, or etc.
Players shouldn't be playing things -designed- to be antagonists because it'd be 90% boring, 10% excitement, and 100% people being mad about being griefed. They should be playing characters that end up opposed due to emotional, reasonable conflict.

I'd argue it's a preferable way to make 'outside Rust' dangerous without needing to have Gato, swarms of beetles and other nasty NPC's that will istagib you camp every gate. I'd much rather be PK'd with the possibility of a cool scene than just FUCK FACE BARKER HITS YOU FOR HORRIFIC DAMAGE. YOU DIE. In an eye bleeding wall of text.

That can, may, and likely will exist, someday. The current suggestion's inelegant and won't get you there, though. Gun combat=/=cool PK death almost ever.

Gun combat = you getting killed without ever really seeing your opponent half of the time, and its even MORE "oh god oh god i just got hit horribly now I'm dead."

IMO, If you want to sneak, follow actively. It's too easy otherwise.
