Good question! Since guns don't run off of sole or dual wield. Yet its being wielded in the off hand would it qualify as dual wield in regards to the sword. Does the game make a distinction between the kind of weapon that is designated as wielded? If not I'm assuming dual wield.

Ok, ok! Because it seems we have people on both sides of this, we only really have one solution, don't we? I need a volunteer to be smashed about the face for a few hours ever day until I see if my skills improve! Come on, don't be shy now!

I'm fairly certain that a sword and pistol combo uses solewield from what little experience I've had using it; maybe because a pistol doesn't technically count as a weapon?
When I played Cyrus, I'd only used the combo once during the entire time in the game, but I was able to kill a lagato that way. Four of the six shots hit, so I was lucky I guess, but I highly doubt I would've been able to take it down using the non-existent dual-wield my guy had.
I also used the combo for the entirety of the Guantlet, to good effect. Once again, I don't see how my guy would've been able to make past even one fight if the combo used dual-wield since he didn't even have novice in it, but he did have adroit sole-wield and familiar handguns.
Editted to add: Also, I distinctly remember using longblades with pistols. Now, it's possible my guy had peak strength; I'm not sure if he did. But he wasn't a RPP character, so I highly doubt he managed to get it. Besides, I think I prioritized constitution.
Editted to add, again: Wait, I think I used the upgrade command to give him peak strength possibly.

We should have a skill-style for small-blade to be used with a pistol/sawn-off shotgun (if they're ever implemented) that promotes quicker balance, gives better aim in combat, and focuses more on using the knife to deflect attacks rather then attack, though it would still get the occasional stab in.

You can strike with a pistol or gripped rifle in combat so its registering as some sort of melee attack. Would be surprised if dual-wield wasn't used during the rolls but I do remember dealing blunt damage with a rifle melee attack in ARPI.
