Write gender neutral concept. Flip pronouns.
Possibly not applicable here, I'll grant you, but it worked out well enough for me, twice, to the point that I think certain players are still confused about my gender. |
I don't need to play female characters to make people confused about my gender.
On-topic:
I can play anything I want. Ahahahaha.

A 'politician' who is trying to become president of the moon.
A robot who thinks it's people.
A dark, cybernetic stallion.

I occasionally get the urge to play a scathingly witty quasi-victorian fancy man who dominates you with his total unwillingness to acknowledge your humanity. But I can't really manage the psychological rationalization necessary to pull off the unquestioned sense of privilege and raging superiority complex that underlies such a concept.
Perhaps sometime I will come up with a scathingly witty quasi-victorian fancy man who is in reality deeply insecure and self-hating.
I also sometimes consider making an earnest and idealistic young person who has to contend for the first time with the evils of the world. I love interacting with those characters (provided the player is seriously in it for the contending part and doesn't just selectively ignore any bad things that happen in favor of continuing on in a state of naive stasis), but I can't really pull it off. I'm a cynical, suspicious rogue at heart.

| personally? I can't play evil PCs. I just can't, ever. I cannot just go out of my way to F over other people IG, unless they have done something to -really- deserve it. I have been told by one or two people I do idealistic, good people best, so that's what I stick to, more or less. |
To me, "evil" is meaningless as a concept, but I enjoy playing "villains." There's a great quote attributed to Alan Rickman, in response to being asked how he felt about portraying villains so frequently.
He apparently said, "I don't play villains. I play very interesting people."
And I think that's why he's so good at it. He doesn't view his characters as "evil" or even necessarily "the bad guy," which means he can understand and sympathize with them. Every villain is just trying to do what s/he thinks is Right, or at least the best s/he can with what s/he has. And to me that's so much more interesting than playing a guy who is just trying to do what everyone collectively agrees is Right.
I don't like ruining anyone else's sunny day, either, OOCly, but there's nothing more fun than being the tortured soul everyone else loves to hate. It really doesn't have to involve actually hurting anyone in a coded way or depriving them of their livelihood, either. Although I have found that it can be a tough line to walk -- some people really enjoy seeing their PCs get into difficult or unpleasant situations, be challenged, harmed, etc, and some people really don't appreciate it at all. It's not always easy to balance your pet villain's internal motivations with everyone else's good time. But it's not impossible, and it can be very rewarding.

One concept I've had trouble with a couple times is a con-man. I think it's a good idea at the time I think of it, but it always ends in me realizing a few things: People don't play games often, and if they do, they're almost never willing to bet. Players are some really smart people, and it's hard to trick them into anything. And the playerbase is pretty small, so I run out of targets REAL fast.
Also, the "woobie". Only ever made one character like that. It was going well at first; some people were pretty hostile towards him, and I managed to get some digusted looks every now and then. But after so long, the majority of people sympathized with him, so I had to use self-pity; which a woobie, it does not make. I guess I would've had more fun if he didn't outlive his shock-value. Lesson to take away is, don't except people to be mean towards your character if you're trying to make some sort of outcast. At least, not for very long.
