I love the idea, but I think the only thing getting in the way is game balance, as you said.

Would be nice to see g-quality crafts for armor (other than shields and stuff), though I don't think we've been told "no" on that yet. It just hasn't happened.

The idea with the tempered plate is for it to be about the same as ordinary kevlar bodysuit based on the fact that you're mostly just replacing the hardened layers with tempered steel

with this in mind it's not really a game balance shift, so much as a different road to the same goal... though obviously metal is alot more common than silver, yet the suit needs a rather large amount of metal, and it may be heavier than a bodysuit... and though the metal may be common, an ordinary bodysuit level of armor skill is not common

I'm slightly amazed that we have old chains that we've found but nobody has made chain-mail armor out of metal, as a very heavy, very tough protection.

I think the avoidance of gear viewed as very "medievalesque" or "fantasy-settingesque" is the point, but I'm full of shit already because the main form of combat in the game is done with swords, axes, maces and polearms that, while they use modern-ish materials, are still basically the same damn thing.

So yeah, chainmail would be nice, but the argument there is someone'll probably be like, "HEY GUISE I SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE STEEL PLATEMAIL" and then, well...

You know how this ended.

I figure chainmail would a redonkulously heavy, yet protective replacement for the 'kevlar greatcoat', taking up the same slot but offering instead of general boolets protection, offering general melee protection all over except the head and feet. And of course, would be sort of nice for some chain-stitched clothing much like 'armored shirt' and 'pants', why not 'chained pants' and 'chained shirt' to provide a somewhat casual yet safe set of clothing.

open link chainmail is good for slashing protection but most blades are going to open rings on the thrust and go right through (the rings literally open up and turn around to make the smallest hole possible and let the blade slide through)

if you rivet the links it should work well against thrusts too until you get to things that are literally small enough to through a ring

but 0 bullet protection, it is made of holes after all.

Finally, a use for knives!

Sorry, we won't be adding new types of armor anytime in the near future, for a variety of code reasons none of which are very interesting.

As long as I don't see people just wearing chainmail, I really don't care. Chainmail alone will not protect you from anything except cuts.
