Also to add-- clearly y'all are stressing out at least one of your clanleads, if they're distressed enough about it to get someone to post on the forums for them. Try not to depend so much on clanleads doing everything for you. It makes us pull our hair out in frustration when no one will do anything, including RP, unless prompted. I've singlehandedly upheld five separate simultaneous conversations with clan members before, because not a one of them would interact with the others of their own accord-- it seemed that they'd only respond if I initiated. That's -difficult-, mmkay? Don't make your clanleads do that.

| It's dangerous to go out. It's difficult to lead effectively, and people are risk-averse. This leads to an insane concentration of power and authority and responsibility in the few individuals who are trusted by the playerbase to lead runs, because anyone else might make a mistake in leading, and that mistake might easily be fatal to some or all of the group. This isn't a knock against those individuals at all, but I'd love to see the ability for there to be more than one group going out at once, without the very real fear of dying if there are less than 20 people in the group. |
I totally get what you're saying, but I feel the need to point out that this - and the bolded part in particular - is largely player perception, and generally incorrect. It's really not that dangerous, but people behave as if there's four lagatos in every room. You can absolutely go scavenging with half a dozen people and be totally fine. Lagatos are tough but not that bad, and they're the most dangerous thing out there.
I feel like there's a mismatch between the actual danger of the game world and the way players treat it, and I would like to point out that there have been literally zero deaths to non-animated wildlife in scav groups since the game launched. Nobody has been killed by animals unless they went out alone or in pairs... ever. It simply hasn't happened. In fact, people don't even get close to dying anymore except that one time when Holmes miscalculated some stats for a mob.
Players can and have gone out with 4-5 people and had challenging, engaging gameplay with room for roleplay and come back alive, but somehow this collective idea of needing to bring the whole playerbase out of necessity has arisen for no apparent reason. Crocs can literally be soloed by any decent fighter, and two or three such combatants can take on a lagato without being in any real danger of dying sooner than they can rescue eachother, especially if they have another couple of backup people adding damage and ready to rescue for a while.

Huh. My apologies, then Throttle - my experience with going out during the first week of the game was that a group of 7 people went out and were almost instantly met by 2 lagatos at once, which took three of the group members down to 2 stars very, very quickly.
Granted, that's the first week, when everybody's in crap armor and has crap skills. But that group didn't get more than 4 rooms away from the gate, so it made me rather wary, to say the least.
Maybe we need to also work on
1. Changing player perceptions of the level of danger.
2. Getting clanleads to start training other people to lead, then. I'm not sure if this happens already, but if it doesn't, then it needs to.

I think part of the frustration with this particular scenario was that we had about twenty people and about six roleplaying. It wasn't a scavenge situation, and sure, maybe it wasn't the pinnacle of excitement, but stuff is still coming of it (ideally). Stuff and scavs aside, I'm seeing a lot of the same people idling a lot. A whole lot. A wholewholewhole lot. People who don't wanna engage with people outside their mold, people that want to ignore people's emotes directly, people that just aren't multifaceted in a way where it's showing externally. And that's going to burn people out mass-style.
Immerse, immerse, immerse, I don't care what boring thing you're doing, try to be creative and make an effort and feed off of each other. Take any hook you can get if you can't make one yourself and just run with it.

Immersion is fine but since the current driving focus of the game is "Stuff Acquisition" and the code backing it, meaning our roleplay is backing CODED gameplay instead of how it should be, code backing roleplay, this means, given reigning perception, anyone more interested in Roleplay than they are code or objects or gear or loot or skills?
They're SOL.
To paraphrase what I just told Irkallia:
Give me an enemy to fight. (Conflict.)
Give me a reason to lead. (Delegate shit you know you can do, and want others to be able to aswell.)
Give me a banner to hold up. (Create a clan-centric prevailing culture promoting one's own clan and not anyone else's.)
Give me a goal to reach towards that isn't stuff related. (If stuff is needed to do something, get it out of the way as quickly as possible. If you're waiting on someone else to do it for you, keep finding people who could work on it, and pick the one who can do it fastest.)
And start working towards it every day. Instead of going on scav runs promising to "get around to it".

I do love it when staff identify problems, several weeks before they become serious issues, and begin prep to resolve them...
Just a little more patience...

I totally agree with everything WD has said, but I have a little issue with this:

Maybe not always necessarily the person who can do it fastest, but someone who's enthusiastic and can get it done in a reasonable amount of time. Always privileging people who are able to be online more/frequently leaves out people who can't play as much, and that's not fun either. E.G., I actually would have liked to attend the event last night and add to the RP, but unfortunately by the time it was starting I knew I wouldn't be able to hang around for the duration.

Sure, okay, I agree with Star. A -reasonable- amount of time sounds better than "eh I pick you because you'll do it quickest."
But they have to be able to log in and get it done if it needs done, yeah.

You were all half naked and with newbie skills in the first week of the game.

With all the spam going on in the window, as well as the length of some of these trips, and for some of the other reasons mentioned above, don't you think people deserve more credit than that?
You must be a very superior caliber of player yourself since you feel this way; do you think some of us are working toward where you are? Maybe you could help the rest of us by thinking up a way to provide some engaging RP during these trips.
