I always thought that bows and arrows would be actual weapons in this kind of game. Mainly due to the fact that it's fundamentally easier to craft plastic shafts with metal tips etc. Probably stated before once and shut down. Iunno

Unfortunately, bows and arrows aren't feasible due to the way that firearms are coded.

That's kind of surprising, actually! Couldn't you just rename a gun into a bow, and a bullet into an arrow (with a hidden arrow caliber)? I mean, I'm not going to fight and say NO YOU'RE WRONG, but there must be something I'm not getting here. Although I suppose that could be the same problem with slingshots.
I always thought the reason we didn't have bows was because they were too powerful as silent PK tools.

There are a billion echoes tied to firearms, not to mention the hardcoded way bullets function.

Ah-hah. That makes sense, I guess. They're gunpowder propelled bullets. Yes, that's it.

Its been a long time since I've used a sling. How does the game handle them? Would a crossbow be any more feasible?

Almost all of the damage from guns results from bleeding/bloodloss at any caliber. This doesn't work with arrows, as you want a lot of the damage to come from the raw impact, and less from bleeding.
Short of having a coder(we don't), it'd just be a redesc of guns into bows and arrows, or (minimally more ideally) crossbows, and they wouldn't be thematically different.
And then we'd have the issue of bows(and slightly less-so crossbows) requiring more a great deal more skill and physical endurance than guns: how do we balance that? Require good str+? Make them require greater skill-levels for the same effect? A bow used at adroit as effective as a gun at familiar?
And then there's the issue of range. Crossbows and bows just aren't the same range. Do we put bows at 1-2 rooms?
I miss bows, and I _really_ miss crossbows. But even if we could code them in, if we made it (even relatively) realistic, they'd be more underpowered than smallblade or brawling.

well grandpa, I agree with everything you said in the basics (and the idea of different classes of bows for different strengths/damages could be neat, more codey than I like)...except for the appraisal of their effectiveness.
I mean, historically a crossbow can bore a hole into an unarmored man more than enough to kill him with one hit, something a small knife would have a harder time accomplishing, let alone a fist. Even against targets armored in layers of leather, crossbows have proven to be dangerous as all hell, enough to kill people, and (in more rare cases, admittedly) piercing plate.
Not saying we need to code them in (since we don't really have a coder at present), but I do think they could have a place if we did.

The comparison is smallblade to polearm, and bows to guns. I'm not saying they're weak as a knife, I'm saying they're underpowered compared to guns. With reduced damage and reduced range, and a greater skill requirement...what place do they actually have?
